Aims for 2017

In 2017, the SASDB Executive aims to achieve the following:

  1. Oversee the 2017 National Schools Debating Championships, being held in the Eastern Cape.
  2. Organise and introduce an international tournament, with the aim of developing Academy speakers.
  3. Organise National Trials, for the SA Junior and SA teams.
  4. Send the South African Team to the World Schools Debating Championships (WSDC).
  5. Strengthen debating in the provinces of Limpopo, North-West, the Northern Cape and Mpumalanga.
  6. Continue supporting ongoing efforts to develop debating in under-resourced areas throughout South Africa.

We welcome suggestions and comments on how best to achieve these aims.

Many of these projects will require external funding in order to make them successful. Should you be interested in contributing to the work of the SASDB, please click here for more information.

  1. hey how could we join your debate programme because we are NGO wanting to start a debating tournament with the schools of Langa and the near by Area’s.

    1. Hi there. I suggest that you get in touch with the Western Cape Schools Debating Board (go to the Western Cape page and scroll all the way to the bottom to find their contact details). They will be able to put you in touch with the co-ordinators of the Township Debating League, which works with some schools in Langa, as well as debating trainers, should you need them.

  2. Re: “Strengthen debating in the provinces of Limpopo, North-West, the Northern Cape, and possible Mpumalanga (extent of involvement will be dependent on funding)”

The Eastern Cape Province has been the most neglected province academically and otherwise. I believe that school debating and public speaking provide ample opportunities for overcoming the challenges faced by learners in the Eastern Cape.
    Thank you.

    1. With the recent involvement of Rhodes University and the re-establishment of the Eastern Cape Debating Board, debating within the Province is in a significantly stronger position than it has been for a while and it will continue to be developed by that body.

Unfortunately, their is no Schools Debating board in the four provinces mentioned within our aims. Hence, we have a desire to establish structures that will allow for debating training and tournaments to occur within those provinces, so that they can compete at the national championships.

  3. please send me more info on ur competitions and hw cn my school participate on them or register on your database, i am based in Aliwal North Eastearn Cape

  4. We are InspiraXion.com an organisation which also aims at initiating and developing debating in the rural schools Eastern Cape, specifically former Transkie area. We will be having a debating tournament during the school holidays of June.

Through this site we were able to get contacts of Rhodes Scholars representing SA Debating here in the EC, we have inquired and reached out for help but to no avail. Is there any another way to get support and help from SA Debating Board. We would like the learners in the disadvantaged areas to also be part of debating. Please help.

    1. Hi Thozama,

The Northern Cape is part of our New Provinces Development Project, which you can read more about . It’s awesome that you’re so enthusiastic about rekindling debating in your provinces, so we will definitely email you once we have finalised dates and details for the first workshops.

I hope this answers your question.

      Yours,
      Devi

  6. Hi. My name is Geraud. i am a student studying logistics at the Tshwane University of Technolog living in Pretoria. I am passionate about debating but never had the opportunity to learn or met anyone to teach me how.. Can i be able to join your academy? or you only need highly talented people!! If it is not possible for me to join, please inform me about coach or other school where i can learn to debate. Thanks

    1. Hi Geraud, the SASDB only manages school level debating. There is a debating society at TUT, so you should get in touch with them!
