National Trials

The South African Schools Debating Team Trials are the culmination of a long and rigorous selection and pre-training programme that starts from the first day of the previous year’s National Schools Debating Competition.

The process starts with the South African coach convening a panel of experienced selectors to watch debates at the National competition and consider the talents of various speakers from both the Open and Development streams. From these discussions twelve debaters representing a mix of skill and potential are selected to attend S.A. National Trials.

The South African Schools Debating Trialists fought hard and endured a brutally competitive trials process to emerge from an exceptional group of talented and driven debaters.

From the group of trialists for the 2017 WSDC team, the following were selected:

  • Katya Broomberg
  • Eric Kazadi
  • Tshepo Mofokeng
  • Daniel Lee
  • Michaela Ho

We congratulate them and wish them the best for the World Championships in Bali.

    1. Hi Dimakatso. You sound like a really enthusiastic debater! Are you a member of your high school’s debating club? The way to qualify for provincial and national teams is to compete with your school team in the provincial league. In Johannesburg, the league is organised by SACEE – the South African Council for English Education. You can find league contact details on the Gauteng page. –Admin

    1. Hi Ronwyn,

  2. Hi, we have a community based NPO looking after the development of school learners in many areas: academic and social. We are based in Freestate. We assist with career guidance, mentoring. We also organice competitions that assist learners to take part in national competitions such as maths olympiads. We have an idea of assisting learners to take part in provincial, national and international debates. Do you perhaps know of provincial competitions in Freestate affiliated to your organization? The idea is to assist learners to participate in this provincial competition, eventually into national and ultimately into the the international competitions.

    1. Dear Ndabeni,
The Free State Debating Board are in charge of debating within the province and host a number of tournaments and workshops that your students will be able to enter. My suggestion is that you contact them directly (freestatedebating@gmail.com) as they host the Provincial tournament that determines the students that will represent the Free State at the National Tournament in December. I wish you the best of luck for the coming year. – :) Tristan von Zahn (Operations Officer)

    1. Dear Thomlinson,
Speakers for the National Trials are selected at the National Schools Debating Championships from the pool of competitors, based on merit. In order to be eligible to compete at the National tournament you have to be selected to be a representative of you respective Provincial debating team, speakers for which are selected at the Provincial Debating tournament. If you follow the links at the top of the website and select your particular province, you will find the contact details of the Chairperson of your provincial board who will be able to give you more information on the Provincial Debating Tournament.- :) Tristan von Zahn (Operations Officer)

    1. Hi Daniel
Each province runs their Provincial trials independently and so you will need to contact Debby Nixon (debby.nixon747@gmail.com) for further details on those. The next set of National Trials have not yet been scheduled and if you are selected as a trialist you will receive those details as they become available.
Hope this helps – Sam Dunne (Operations Officer)
